Professional indemnity is, in these days of increasing litigation, important for all of us who are working with clients on an individual basis. In the school and institutional based context, i.e. non private, guidance indemnity is usually covered by the school’s general insurance policy, providing that the activity to be insured is noted in the the school’s guidance plan. However, we would encourage school-based colleagues who are engaging in a considerable counselling caseload, that as well as attending supervision, it may be worth considering taking out their own professional indemnity. Providing that the guidance counsellor is abiding by the Code of Ethics and other requirements of practice, indemnity offers security and peace of mind.
Private Practice Insurance
All private practitioners are advised to have professional indemnity.
Professional indemnity for guidance counsellors was provided until recently at a special rate for IGC members, negotiated by Head Office with Heavey Insurance Brokers. In recent times Heavy has amalgamated with OBF Insurance Group, Baggot Street (01 676 0201)
Including government levy, administration costs etc,the premium for 2018-19 was in the region of 108 euro approximately depending on the qualifications/experience of the insured and ensuring the requirement for supervision and ongoing CPD. The most recent contact person there was Emma Reid.
