One of the main aims of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, as outlined in the IGC Constitution, is the “promotion of research in the field of Guidance Counselling services and the sharing of results with government departments, statutory bodies, and the general public”. In line with the IGC Strategic Plan 2024–2027, which seeks to “strengthen our advocacy to ensure that the positive voice of the guidance counselling profession in policy-making is heard and respected”, the IGC is committed to “investing in research that delivers policy-relevant insight for both IGC and its stakeholders”.

About the National Survey

The latest IGC National Survey 2024/2025 provides comprehensive data on guidance counselling practice across:

• Second-level schools and colleges
• Adult guidance and employment services
• Private practice and other settings
• Members not currently practising

With a response rate of approximately 46%, the findings offer a robust national snapshot of the profession.

Key Themes Emerging

The data highlight:

• Increasing complexity in members’ roles
• Rising mental health needs among students and clients
• Uneven allocation of guidance hours
• Significant levels of unpaid workload
• Strong affirmation of the guidance counsellor’s role in progression, transitions and emotional wellbeing

A Growing Evidence Base

This survey builds on previous national surveys conducted in 2022/23 and 2019, as well as earlier studies undertaken following the 2012 cuts to guidance. Together, these datasets strengthen the IGC’s ability to engage credibly with policymakers on workload, resourcing, supervision, professional standards and reform.
