Summer 2015 Newletter

Dear Colleagues,
We hope you are enjoying the summer break and looking forward to a sunny August!

We wish your students every good wish in the coming days and hope that they will be satisfied with their Leaving Certificate results and that they gain successful entry to the course of their choice. We remind ourselves and our students that the Leaving Certificate is only one milestone in their young lives and it does not define the wonderful people that they are.

Our Colleague, Brian Wall has produced a wonderful resource; The Results are Out – What Now? This is designed to answer frequently asked questions that occur around the time of the results and CAO offers being published. It deals with how offers are made, receiving and accepting an offer, round two, vacant places, random selection, and reviewing and rechecking scripts. It also deals with options for those who receive no offer, and also pointers to what life will be like in college. The back page contains a summary of all the important dates from when the results are published. Depending on the circumstances in your school you could, (i) photocopy all or part of the booklet and post out to students/parents a few days before the results, or (ii) photocopy all or part of the booklet and put a copy in the envelope to accompany the Leaving Certificate result, or (iii) e-mail the document to all parents, or (iv) post on your school website and send out a text to inform parents/students it is there. This Booklet is available to download here and on  in the resources section.

Below are contact numbers and details for IGC Head Office and IGC/NPCpp Helpline which we hope will, in conjunction with the attached The Results are Out – What Now?, assist you in supporting your students and their Parents/Guardians at this important time.

We have been busy promoting Guidance Counselling and the essential role we provide to our young people. We had an informal meeting and photo-shoot with Minister for Education and Skills Jan O Sullivan to launch the IGC/NPCpp Helpline. A very productive meeting With Minister Damien English took place in July.  We have submitted our Pre-Budget Submission 2016 to the Minister, to all members of the Oireachtas, Managerial Bodies , NPCpp and Unions, we have strategy meetings scheduled in the run up to the budget and  we hope for positive outcomes in the October Budget. Many partners in Education have already contacted us to say they are going to openly support our submission. More details of all meetings will be in the President’s September Diary.

We have contributed many Guidance Counselling articles on behalf of the IGC to local and National Media to be published and broadcast over the next two weeks. IGC contributions feature in Irish Independent, Irish Examiner and Irish Times ‘Exam and Career Supplements’ 12th and 17th August, Sunday Independent 16th August; Evening Echo, Farmers Journal and local Papers. IGC will be represented on TV 3 Midday with Elaine Crowley, Morning Ireland, and TV3 AM, Newstalk with Pat Kenny, Radio Na Gaeltachta, Teilifís na Gaeltachta. Shannon side, Midlands 3FM, Radio Limerick, Kildare FM, Tipp FM,  Tipp West ,UTV Ireland to mention but a few on Wednesday 12th August and throughout the coming week.

Live lunchtime video web casts and blogs from Irish Independent on Wednesday 12th August and Monday 17th August. Follow hourly questions and Answers on the IGC and NPC Twitter accounts. Press Releases for both the Launch of the Helpline and Leaving Cert Results have already been forwarded to all Media contacts in advance of 12th August. We will post up details and podcast links where possible on IGC Website and IGC Twitter. Tom Farrell will also post the links on his Career News Website.

We have 130 extra new members. The total membership of the IGC on the 10/08/2015 is 1221. This is an unprecedented number of members in the history of the IGC .The membership breakdown is as follows: 779 second level members, 56 student members, 348 adult sector members, 14 principals, 8 deputy principals, 16 private practitioners. We welcome new members and returning members warmly and reassure them of our support.

We would like to take this opportunity to reassure and reaffirm you of our dedicated service and unfailing commitment to the IGC and to supporting all our colleagues. We will be writing to Local Branch Officers asking you to nominate us for a second term of Office at your upcoming September /October Branch AGM meetings.

We sincerely thank all our members for their unfailing support and encouragement during our first year in office. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can assist you in any way. We are humbled by your generosity of time and spirit in helping us to grow and build momentum for our ongoing campaign to restore and preserve our profession.

Ní neart go cur le chéile,

Míle buíochas, le gach dea-ghuí,
